What You’re Growing
Count Dracula is a compact, high-contrast pepper plant that looks insane in pots, garden beds, or as a “feature” plant near your patio. It produces lots of jalapeño-ish shaped peppers and brings both ornamental beauty and real heat.
Heat + Best Uses
This is not a sweet pepper—it lands in the hot range.
Use it anywhere you’d use a hot chilli:
-
fresh slices in tacos, chilli, stir fry
-
pickled rings
-
dried flakes or powder
-
small batches of hot sauce (it looks wicked when blended with red peppers)
How to Grow Count Dracula in Ontario/Canada
Peppers need a head start in Canada. Plan to start indoors and transplant once nights are reliably warm.
1) Start seeds indoors
-
Start 8–10 weeks before last frost (Ontario is often late April–May depending on area).
-
Use a seed-starting mix, keep warm (peppers love heat), and give strong light once sprouted.
2) Transplant timing
-
Transplant outdoors only after frost risk is gone and temperatures are stable.
-
Harden off seedlings for 7–10 days (gradually introduce sun/wind).
3) Sun + soil
-
Full sun (the more the better).
-
Well-draining soil and consistent watering (don’t keep it soggy).
4) Containers work great
Because it’s compact (~1.5 ft), it’s perfect for pots on a deck or storefront display.
Harvest Tips
-
You can harvest when peppers are dark/black, but they’ll be fully ripe when they turn red.
-
The longer they ripen, the more developed the flavour tends to be.
